article

By Annie Orbison
In Edina there are many activities to keep people occupied. Now that Christmas is coming up, Barbi Lee Dance Studio is gearing up to perform The Nutcracker ballet.

Barbi Lee Dance Studio has been putting on the Nutcracker ballet for eighteen years. Nora Anderson, a junior, who plays the part of the Snow Queen said, “We spend extra time rehearsing The Nutcracker compared to the time we spend on our Spring Recital.”

This year the Nutcracker has a new face, literally. Jack Ahern is the new Nutcracker and Snow King. Jack has been dancing for eight years and was eager to be chosen to play the lead role.

“They are a really great group to work with. I’ve had a great time getting to know all of them,” said Jack. The same could be said for the girls working with Jack. “They all love him; he’s friendly and works really well with them,” said Ms. Barb Lotsberg, owner of Barbi Lee Dance Studio.

Auditions were held to replace the former Nutcracker. Jack has a family friend who works close to Ms. Lotsberg. He informed Jack’s father about the auditions. Jack dances at the Summit Dance Shoppe and was thrilled to land the role of the Nutcracker. “I am really nervous but excited to perform in this year’s production,” Jack said.

The Nutcracker will be performed at Richfield Middle School on December 1, at 7:00 p.m and December 2, at 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m.

Zephyrus

Whenever Zephyrus is handed out, there is an exciting buzz in the hallways of the high school. In this issue there is a letter to the editor complaining about an article in the first issue called "Nice... shirt." The letter to the article expressed the readers disgust of the sexist words usued in this article.
"Nice... shirt" was written in a way that objectified women. The author, a sophmore, wrote about the way guys look for in a girl, and according to the article guys look for girls who are "5'3 and a 32C." Which is offensive to a lot of people, not just females. The letter to the editor covers most of the feelings that readers of the article "Nice...shirt" had. What is really appalling is the response that Zephyrus gave to the letter.
In the response to the letter, Zephyrus's arguement was that, although they were sorry to have hurt readers feelings, they say that it gave a "realistic perspective" of how high school guys view females. Also, they responded that objectification of women is very common, and is how our society views women. Is this response suppose to get readers to continue reading Zephyrus? By saying it is okay to write it because its the way people view women. Zephyrus is a great paper, but may have to get better ethics.

Why We Have to Hold it: The Bathroom situation at Edina High School

Last year Edina Senior High School was fortunate to improve their facilities. One of the nice improvements to Edina High was the bathrooms located near the new Performing Arts Theatre. These bathrooms are very nice, but there is just one problem, they're locked during the school day. Can you believe it? The sad part is that the next closest bathrooms are about three hallways down from these nice, new, convient bathrooms. So instead of having a bathroom just down the hall from you, you have to high-tail it all the way to Fick Auditorium, the old theatre, in order to be on time for class to start. Yeah I know there is a seven minute passing time, but if you have a class on the other side of the school it is next to impossible to be on time for that class that is by those nice, new bathrooms. It also doesn't help us students that if we are tardy three times a quater we get detention. So why not just let us use the bathrooms near the new theatre, and save us the hassle of being late to class taking away our time to learn.
